United Nations Children’s Fund
UNICEF
UNICEF Geneva – Human Rights unit
My tenure in UNICEF’s Human Rights Unit in Geneva I immersed myself deeply in the structures and processes of international human rights monitoring mechanisms of the United Nations (UN). I attended all Charter and Treaty Body sessions, gaining comprehensive insights into the mechanisms of human rights monitoring and enforcement. I observed firsthand the important work being done by special rapporteurs, committee members, and other actors while attending the 43rd Universal Periodic Review (UN Human Rights Chambers), the Committee on the Rights of the Child treaty body sessions (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights – OHCRH), and select independent reviews.
My role in the unit was to produce policy briefs highlighting core issues and recommendations, as well as areas of overlap with UNICEF’s mandate. I distilled complex reflections on the capabilities and challenges faced by countries into accessible recommendations for non-profits and governments. These recommendations were aimed at guiding child-conscious legislation and programs to improve outcomes for vulnerable young people through impactful evaluations and accessible, easy-to-implement child-focused policy recommendations.

War Never Changes, But Global Institutions Can Make it Change
2024 has seen continued pop culture engagement with the theme of war. 2023 saw Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” a biographical thriller based on J. Robert Oppenheimer examining his role in the invention of the atomic bomb, juxtaposing scientific achievement with its devastating potential. This spring, Jonathan Nolan’s TV adaptation of the “Fallout” video game franchise, set in a post-apocalyptic world decimated by weapons of mass destruction. Fallout, similar to Oppenheimer highlights the clash between optimistic technological propaganda and the harsh realities of war.
